The rising popularity of beach holidays in the 1960's saw an increase in the number of drowning fatalities across the country. The pressure was put on local authorities to resolve the problem.
Formed by local volunteers in 1966, Dawlish Warren Life Saving Club was created to patrol the beach, train the public in water safety, and to save lives. 60 years later, the club is still a regular sight on the beach, training the next generation of beach lifeguards.
Our charitable objectives include:
Promote the safety aspects of beach and water activities.
Develop and enforce all aspects of beach life saving methods.
Educate, to increase public awareness of the dangers of water and beach activities.
We are a surf-lifesaving club and registered charity first and foremost, but we have grown as a club; not all of our members aspire to be lifeguards, and many simply enjoy being on the water and building their fitness through the activites we offer.
We're not a "train and go home" club. DWLSC exists today because of the hard work of its members, and everyone is asked to chip in with fundraising, demonstrations, beach patrol hours and club maintenance. It's what makes us a community as well as a club.
All of our funds go back into training, equipment and running the club. None are spent on wages.
